Top 5 Most Loved Jane Austen Books

Pride and Prejudice

Pride and prejudice is considered as a grown-up fairy tale, which was hailed as one of the most popular novels of all time.

As you read this book, you’ll easily fall in love with the characters. Plus, the chemistry between the proud Mr. Darcy and the prejudiced Lizzy Bennet is legendary for a reason.

All the elements of a great fairy tale story are here – romantic tension, heartbreaking separation, unexpected twists and a highly anticipated happy ending.

Persuasion

Persuasion embodies Jane Austen’s subtlety of characterization and her insight into a person’s weaknesses and foolishness. The humor that we have seen in Northanger Abbey is still present. Though, it is more matured and subdued in this novel.

At the age of 27, Anne Elliot is Jane Austen’s oldest heroine. Meanwhile, with Austen’s love and admiration for military men in her family, the character of Captain Wentworth was formed.  As a result, Captain Wentworth easily became her most favored leading man.

Persuasion is intense, but not heavy; entertaining but definitely not frivolous.

Emma

Emma Woodhouse is a spoiled young lady who is used to getting things her way. The plot focuses on romance and courtship and displays the distinction of class and gender plus the importance of manners.

Though presented with a convoluted plot, the novel is centered on Emma and how she evolved from a self-indulgent girl into a considerate woman, who was able to accept the compromises that love and marriage requires.

With its charming but imperfect heroine, combined with its subtle and witty exploration of relationships, Emma is mostly considered as Austen’s most flawless work.

Northanger Abbey

Northanger Abbey is one of Jane Austen’s earliest works. This book was published by her family shortly after her death in 1817.

Catherine Moreland is the naïve but appealing heroine who has a certain taste for gothic literature. With this, she became determined to see herself as the heroine of a thrilling and dark romance upon the invitation of her suitor, Henry Tilney, to Northanger Abbey.

Executed with a high-spirited gusto, this is considered as Jane Austen’s most light-hearted novel. But at its core, Northanger Abbey has proven to be a serious and unsentimental commentary about love and marriage.

Sense and Sensibility

Sense and sensibility is the very first book that Jane Austen has published. This book tells the story of the Dashwood sisters: the impulsive Marianne and the reasonable Elinor.

This novel focuses on the lives of these young ladies as they settle into their new home and became acquainted with John Willoughby and Colonel Brandon. Eventually, the ladies experience love and heartbreak. Thus, realizing that not every man they meet is a true gentleman.

I went to Kuala Lumpur in 2011 and here are some of my suggested spots to visit. I only stayed there for two nights, but was able to squeeze in the following in my itinerary:

Petronas Twin Towers

Soaring at a height of 451.9 meters, Kuala Lumpur’s twin skyscraper was named as the tallest building in the world until 2004, as it was towered by Taipei 101. The Petronas Towers features a post-modern design to stand as Kuala Lumpur’s icon for the 21st century. Comprising of 88 floors and extraordinary features, the structure took 7 years to be completed.

Adrift Notes – A New Beginning

Hello, blogosphere! Welcome me as a plan to document the ups and downs of my adventure on the road, the beach, the city and wherever my feet will take me!

P1310301

Why Adrift Notes? I am now in the stage in my life wherein I have to do whatever I want to do in my own freewill. I am used to doing things to please others – being a good daughter to my parents, a reliable sibling, a sweet and supportive friend. I even do ridiculous things for others to make them happy. What about me? WHAT ABOUT ME?!?!?

It’s about time for me to step out of my comfort zone and explore what needs to be explored. I’m a big girl now and yeah, i’ll say whatever I want to say in this blog. I am not a bad person, but I can be very hyper when I am in the mood.

Oh, the coffee I ordered just arrived. The barista is cute too. Let me give him a….. wink 😉
